I'm after all not totally sure we need a one-size-fits-all solution. By way of analogy, biblatex has an \autocite command that scans ahead for following punctuation and moves that around. Bla bla \autocite{doe20}. can be Bla bla (Doe 2020). Or Bla bla.\footnote{Doe 2020.) "Bla bla" \autocite{doe20}. can be "Bla bla" (Doe 2020). Or "Bla bla".\footnote{Doe 2020.) Then, for more complex cases you'll need special markup provided by the csquotes package. Maybe such a modular solution could be useful? Denis
