OK, in my last email I already said that we have been selected
as a finalist for the Sourceforge Community Award in the category

Most Likely to Change the Way You Do Everything.

I am *very* excited about this, and I would love *us* to win
this award or at least deliver a very good showing.

We need to provide some information, within a week, and I would like
to invite all of you to makes proposals for the short sentences, for the
logo or screenshot we should be offering, and how to create a short
video about the main contributors. Who should be in this video,
and how?

Anyone here who would like to do the collection/editing
of video snippets? I have no technical knowledge in this area, and we
should think about a way to make a nice video showing *several* people,
that will also looks interesting for observers that are not our
default users. This is where your help is *really* needed.

Below are the questions from sourceforge, let the brainstorming begin!

- Carsten

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Complete this sentence in about 140 characters: "Our project is
[-foo-]." For example, "Our project is a tool that helps you wash your
car."

2. Complete this sentence, also in about 140 characters: "We should win
because [-bar-]." For example, "We should win because we have a strong
community and we solve a universal problem."

3. Please provide a logo (or screenshot, if you'd prefer) for your
project. It should be at least 640x480, but we'll also be showing it
as a thumbnail.

4. This one is optional, but it could make a big difference. We'd like
to show our voters a video that introduces them to the core members of
your team. Send along the URL (on YouTube) and we'll make sure they
see it!

6. Our finalists are usually pretty interesting people. Are you
willing to be contacted by our public relations team about interviews
with the press?

Hi Carsten,

great news - suggestions below!

> 1. Complete this sentence in about 140 characters: "Our project is
> [-foo-]." For example, "Our project is a tool that helps you wash your
> car."

"Org is the extensible, customizable, self-documenting real-time project
planner. It makes you more productive by adapting itself to your needs."

> 2. Complete this sentence, also in about 140 characters: "We should win
> because [-bar-]." For example, "We should win because we have a strong
> community and we solve a universal problem."

"We should win because Org captures the essence of project planning.
Discovering Org is the best way to discover your "productive" self."

High-resolution picture of the Unicorn?

- Carsten's video at Google
- shots from Russell Adam's
- shots from various screencasts
- ...

I've just added a small dirty screencast about plain lists:
http://lumiere.ens.fr/~guerry/org-playing-with-lists-screencast.php

I would *love* to have a screencast demonstrating Sebastian's org-infojs
- will work on this.

I have basic knowledge in this area, nothing terrific. I'd glad to help
if no Steven Spielberg jumps on this. :)

Our project is the most flexible and intuitive way to manage
everything, yes everything, in plain text.

We should win because Org-mode has a history of excellence, growing
and adapting to its users' needs without losing itself in complexity.

Any ideas here? Bigger unicorn, or a screenshot?

Would it be sufficient to link them to existing videos, or do we need
new material? I know not all the contributors are featured in existing
videos, if they want to be seen they need to post something in a
hurry. ;]

A friend of mine did the graphical work for the first unicorn.

Maybe I can ping him and ask for a bigger/fancier Unicorn?

If so, what background symbolic directions shall I give him
to inspire a new/better Unicorn?

I don't really think we should change it. I do have a scalable SVG
version of it.
One possibility would be to make a combination of a nice screen shot
(with a better color scheme like Peter Jones') and to integrate the
Unicorn logo into that image.....

Something like this:

Obviously done by a total graphics moron, so if you can do
better, let me know and I'll sent you the two images this is based
on.....

The 3D look for the keywords is actually quite nice.

Hi All,

For an alternative logo, I went to glassgiant.com and generated the
attached file using Christophe Bataillon's logo. I thought it fitted the
"your life in plain text" strapline rather well.

Here are some ideas.

Our project is the best organizing tool that exists in this universe.

We should win because org-mode is transformative, innovative, and it is
supported and developed by an active and friendly community.

I agree that an svg of the unicorn is good.

Perhaps one could collect nice photos of each of the major contributors
who agree to be part of the video. These photos could be shown
sequentially (with appropriate transitions between photos) in the video
while the sound track would describe who is in each photo. If adding
sound is too much trouble, one could describe each photo with text,
maybe even org-mode style text.

It shouldn't be too hard to make such a video. I bet ffmpeg would work
to make a nice ogg video that could be posted on the org-mode website.
I'm sure it would be easy to put it on YouTube also.

Great - I just added this to the Worg faq about the unicorn logo.

I think the real problem here is the logistics of this. Does anyone
have any experience with video? Personally I'd like to see Carsten
(obviously), but I think the contributor net should be widened to
include at least one person who's made a significant contribution to
documenting org-mode best-practice, e.g. Bernt, Russel etc...

It'd be really nice to have the videos touch on both user and
developer perspective's, and perhaps even the fantastic community
interplay that occurs on this list.

I'm afraid I've wracked my brains and couldn't come up with anything I
was happy with for this one... These snippets seem to work best when
you can use a consistent metaphor throughout and I struggle to find
one that flows convincingly with the rather trad (and arrogant) "We
should win because ... "... Though I'm really not happy with it, I
think using jargon intended to resonate with the O'Reilly set is a
good idea... e.g. "life hacker", "alpha geek", ... Can anyone offer
any improvements on what I've got? :

"We should win because our community of productivity alpha geeks share
their secrets openly... The pace of Org development is proof it works!"

Hi Rick,

maybe subscribers of this list could send a short video just saying
hello to the cam? (making it fancy or org-related is not forbidden!)
Then we could grab all this and blend it nicely into the video...

Congratulations! Org-mode, Carsten and the developers deserve the
recognition.  Now let's see.

1. Complete this sentence in about 140 characters: "Our project is
[-foo-]." For example, "Our project is a tool that helps you wash your
car."

========================================
Org-mode is the definition of lite weight productivity software. It's
all the tools you need for planning, scheduling, managing projects,
organizing thoughts and more in a well documented, easy to learn and
use package. Organize information in lists, tables, spread sheets,
outlines and more. Mark up, tag, cross reference, annotate and link
to/from your notes and information in the manner that suites you best
using the features you find useful while safely ignoring those
features you don't need. Export and publish your information in
several formats for presentation or interoperability. Extend it to
better suite the way you work and think using builtin hooks and APIs.
========================================

[too long, and yet not enough. maybe...]

========================================
Org-mode is the simple, powerful management & organization tool that
other tools will have to try to match in flexibility and simplicity.
========================================

2. Complete this sentence, also in about 140 characters: "We should win
because [-bar-]." For example, "We should win because we have a strong
community and we solve a universal problem."

========================================
Org-mode already sets the bar high for organization tools and its
community has just begun developing plugins and useful/unexpected
extensions.
========================================

[It hurts to abbreviate it that much.]

That all I got. I'm no good at video or art. Sorry.

Edd

I know it's more than that but we are trying to win aren't we?

Org-mode allows you to master your personal and project information
your way, in plain text, with features which stay out of your way
until you want them, all backed by the power of Emacs.

(I didn't notice a mention of Emacs in other suggestions; seems
essential to me.)

If you go the screenshot way (along the lines of Carsten's mock-up),
I'd suggest using split windows to show off more than one aspect of
org-mode. I'm thinking a vertical split with an agenda buffer in one
window. Static screenshots don't really do org-mode justice---it's
text and superficially just text---and that might give a glimpse into
how it is more.

Congrats on the well deserved finalist slot.

You get the idea. We need to show off what Org-mode is good for, as
well as appeal to the judges' Alpha geek humour.

There were already some good suggestions, I think. And furthermore the
example isn't bad either as Org mode actually *does* help you wash your
car ;)

I don't have a concrete idea for the sentence but when I think about why
Org mode should win Neal Stephenson comes to my mind:

   emacs outshines all other editing software in approximately the same
   way that the noonday sun does the stars

Replace `Emacs' with `Org mode' and `editing' with `organising' and you
have the reason why Org mode should win. Maybe Org mode's singularity in
its area and the fact that it's so much ahead of any other organising
tool can be cast in a 140 character phrase for the jury?!

I wish we could use 140 words (or lines?).

85 Characters I heard in the TV lately:

  Org-mode - the craft of text-editing continued.
  All what text could ever do for you.

  (and even more)

136 Characters:

  Tired of flushing your writings into a binary drain? Still need
  spreadsheets, task managers and publishing tools? Org-mode is for you
  then.

Our project is a uniquely rich life management and publishing tool, with
immense potential for extension by virtue of its implementation in
emacs.

We should win because org is an immensely flexible and yet razor-sharp
tool for users today, built out of code that will be extended for
decades to come.

[My two sentences are rather similar...]

I tend to think that we want a screenshot. I doubt it would be as hard
to describe all the features of any of our competitors as it is for org!
So a screenshot seems like a good chance to pack it all in. I like
Brian's suggestion of split-windows. Maybe we could collaborate on a
bundle containing a minimal .emacs, color-theme code, and an org file
that sets up the color scheme, window confuguration and contents, and
people could submit patches / screenshots to improve it? [I like the win
competition checkbox]

A friend of mine is working on a pretty nice color scheme that will
also work reasonably well with the unicorn icon next to it or
embedded. I hope that we can use that for a nice screen shot.
I like the idea to make a nice screen setup, with an Org file and the
agenda maybe, based on a simple example file.

We need to finish this stuff by Sunday (european time) because I am
traveling Monday/Tuesday and would like to send the stuff on Sunday at
the latest.

We should win because by allowing people to evolve their
productive self, it has created one of the best communities in the

This one need a fix to be able to stand alone:

We should win because by allowing people to evolve their

in the open-source world.

Carsten,

That's almost perfect--just a couple of minor changes:

We should win because by allowing people to evolve their
productive selves, org-mode has created one of the best communities in
the
open-source world.

Here are my own entries, partially building on what I have received so
far:

Org-mode wields the power of Emacs to create a stunningly simple
and incredibly powerful organizational tool that will change
your life.

We should win because by allowing people to evolve their
productive self, it has created one of the best communities in the
open-source world.

I have made a little start here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yPsJpP6Fp28

Bastien will try to cut together a little youtube video about
Org-mode so that we can submit the youtube address of that to
the competition.

I think it would be really great if there would be clips from more
people in that movie, both contributors and users. If you'd like
to help, please make a little movie of you saying a few sentences
or showing off something interesting, and put the video somewhere
where Bastien can pick it up. All these clips need to be short, so
that people actually would like to watch it through.
I understand that Bastien will work on this during the weekend,
so we do not have a lot of time.

First let me say congratulations to Carsten and everyone else on
receiving this honor. Org-mode deserves every bit of recognition it
receives!

I very much like Brian's description of org-mode. I think it does a nice
job of capturing the power and flexibility of the tool.

I myself have been puzzling over this question and haven't been able to
come up with a pithy sentence that sums up the full scope org-mode.
While I think that org-mode is first and foremost a productivity tool,
those unfamiliar with it might be inclined to see it as just "one more
GTD application." But as org-mode aficionados know, it is much, much
more. It is an outliner (the best ever, IMHO), a wiki, a publishing
environment, a note-taking tool, an ad-hoc database system, a
spreadsheet editor, a bookmark manager, etc. In addition to managing
todos and projects, org-mode allows one to perform in one place all
sorts of little tasks (making quick tables, storing random bits of
information, organizing web bookmarks, etc) that would otherwise require
several big GUI applications to accomplish. And it does so in data that
is fully portable. In this sense, Emacs and org-mode offer a truly
integrated computing environment. Org-mode can operate as a simple
outliner and scheduler; but it can also easily serve as a digital hub
that manages and links to everything else. This is something that other
applications often promise---and that many pundits point to as the
future of "cloud" computing---but that remains, for many computer users,
an elusive dream. Org mode takes us "back to the future," as it were. On
the one hand, it takes us back to the basics of plain text. On the other
hand, it points towards a future of truly integrated computing, in which
the walls surrounding big, old-fashioned GUI applications and closed
operating systems are broken down.

That's not 140 characters, alas.

Congratulations again!

- Matt

I also do like Brian's description a lot. But it is 190 characters,
I am not sure if we can stretch the "about 140" this much? I have
been trying to shorten it a bit - please check if it still captures
the essence.....

Here is the current state of our reply to Sourceforge - please comment

text, with features hidden until needed, backed by the power of Emacs.

Hi all,

I'm glad my contribution was of some use. I noticed it was too long
only after I sent it. (I plead sending at 02:30 and a life as yet
innocent of tweets and sms :-)

`data' for `information' shaves off a fair bit.

Best,

That screen shot looks very beautiful. There's one minor glitch. The

I think using analogy and metaphor might be a more effective way to
get the message across in 140 characters. So rather than describing
org-mode features in this constraint are we not better using the
opportunity to pique curiosity? And align ourselves with the OSCON
audience?

After all not even worg, the org manual and the years of discussions
on this list have managed to adequately describe org-mode! Attempting
to do so in 140 characters seems impossible...

How about?

"Org is the life hacker's tool of choice; you'll hack productivity into your
schedule, like you use Emacs to cut code!"

"Org is the life hacker's swiss army knife. Sharp, quick and powerful
you'll use it to cut deadlines and craft your own path to productivity."

Below are what I think are some slight improvements to previous suggestions:

2009/6/11 John Rakestraw <lists@johnrakestraw.com>:
>
> Org-mode masters personal/project information your way, in plain
> text, with features hidden until needed, backed by the power of Emacs.

Org-mode masters personal, project information your way, in plain
text, with features hidden until needed and all the power of Emacs!

> We should win because org-mode, by making users more productive, has
> spawned one of the best communities in the open-source world.

We should win because org-mode, makes users more productive,
spawning one of the best communities in the open-source world.

We should win because org-mode, makes users more productive,
spawning the best community of life hackers in the world.

We should win because org-mode empowers the worlds greatest
life hacker community to cut deadlines and craft a path to productivity.

We should win because org-mode has spawned a community of life
hackers, sharing shortcuts on the brisk walk of productivity

I agree, the screenshot is nice and shows some of the great features of
orgmode. I just want to add another think for consideration:

Pictures often give people their first impression of a software, as
stupid as it is. What do you all think of the used colors?

I personally dislike a too heavily colored look.
Especially given the fact, that the headlines in this screenshot are
short and the keywords long (cf. STARTED - Invite speakers [2/3]),
                                 ~~~~~~~                   ~~~~~ (colored)
this results in a fruit salad like impression I think is rather distracting.
What about a using a *little* bit more decent coloring?
On the other hand, I know lots of people love heavy use of intense
colors, so maybe this really is the best way to get the right impression
out there.
What do you think? How do your org files look like?
  I haven't contributed anything to this project, so I feel a little funny
suggesting anything.  But I really like org mode and hope you win, so
here's another version:
Our project is an extensible outliner that lets you collect your
thoughts in a text file in Emacs and organizes them to make
them useful.
Congratulations and good luck!
Hi Memnon,
I do to some extend agree with you.  The buffer picture does
look very colored and a bit unrealistic.  A real buffer would
look less colored because the distribution between text and
functional elements would be different.  These lines are so short
to make them readable at all in a screenshot.
I actually do use these colors currently and find them quite
workable.
The main issue here is: what if the function of this picture?
It will be on a page together with 9 other colorful logos
or screenshots.  If we show just a window of text, it will
look complete boring in this context, and then I'd much rather
use only the Unicorn.
If people only do as much as clicking through to the homepage,
they will see an image with less color there, and this will
adjust their expectation I am sure.
This is a good point, maybe they will be picky about it.
Also, I am now thinking the 140 chars, what to the english native
speakers here think:  Is this includin or excluding the given sentence
start?????
Our project is a tool to master personal/project data your way,
in plain text, with features out of your way until needed,
backed by the power of Emacs.
I just want to second this point about font anit-ailising.  For better
or worse, I'm scared that for people scanning through many pictures, the
only take-away from this image will be that the font looks like it's
from the early 90s.
I'm not doing so well at following instructions for this task :-[
To this native English speaking ear, it naturally interprets as asking
for approx. 140 chars to be added to the `Our project is' lead in.
However, the phrasing is a bit ambiguous.
What about changing the project's name to `OM'? That'd shave 6 more
chars! ;-)
Best,
I'm afraid I have to agree... The first impression I had was "Auw"...
Too many heavy colors, big non-aliased text... It lacks a certain
style, which is a pity because org-mode itself has plenty of it.
I'm also not sure the unicorn should be pasted into the window like
that, as if it is part of the content.
Sorry I can't be more constructive at this time :-(
Cheers, and all the luck!
Peter.
Will readable lines make the case? It all boils down to the question
you pose: "what's its function?".
> I actually do use these colors currently and find them quite
> workable.
I think there's a difference between what's workable and what's
`attractive at first sight'. These days everything must be "web20",
soft, polished, nice graphics, ...  Too attract people, it must not be
workable, but pretty. I agree with the poster about the "90s look".
If the function of the screenshot/logo is to attract people and make
them click through, it must be appealing AND pick their interest. The
one screenshot on worg with the R plots has some of those qualities,
but I think it's too dark and contains too much info (window is too
big for a scaled-down screenshot).
The alternative --only the logo-- is not bad, but I would add a
slogan, such as "Your life in plain text"; short and bold. The logo by
itself is not well-known and might not invoke this "Hey, what would
that be? Let me see!" reaction.
Hmmm, are there any marketeers on this list?
Cheers,
Peter.
I like it. Also I like the Unicorn and for the purposes of this graphic
I don't think it matters that it looks as though it's part of the text.
You could always put a 10 paragraph disclaimer under it:
  "Contents of the box may differ from those shown. Items displayed may
not always be available in the colour shown, etc."
We cannot know what people will like to look at in advance. Maybe
they'll be lucky to see a screenshot with less colors to rest their
eyes on it.
In the web, The current `mainstream' tends to clean pages with lots of
empty space and a light background I think (e.g. emacs defaults). But
what does that say?
Nothing.
What I mean to say is, that it makes no sense to take into account what
people (...cultural diversity...) might think about it as long as they
won't take offence of our products.
Same holds true for the 140 character sentences. It should be done the
Org-mode way - and Org-mode is extremely flexible. Org-mode would accept
something between 100 and 160 characters I believe :)
Basically I would suggest to take an existing screenshot. We have one
screenshot here and as long as there is no alternative, I'm more than
fine with it.
The new unicorn is great.
Wow!  Nice.  I actually like this effect, as it makes clear that the
Unicorn has been added on the screenshot.
Hi Bastien,
for some odd reasons my posts to <emacs-orgmode@gnu.org> all fail...
(message too big? nope, smaller ones fail as well...)
So I guess our conversation didn't make it, and neither did the
screenshots. Is it worth reposting them? If so, could you forward them?
Thanks,
Peter.
    This picture looks great.  I kinda like the first one Carsten sent
out that some though was too colorful.  That shot also highlighted the
fact that keys were 'special'.  This shot is dangerously close to look
like we're just passing off a colorized outline.  I wonder if we could
put together something that showed a little bit both screen shots.  It
would demonstrate one piece of org-mode's flexibility/tailor-ability.
    Overall though, good work!  I like how the example text explains
to the viewer what he is seeing.
Just a little nit, but should we play up the emacs part?  ("... backed
by the power of Emacs.")  It is an important part of org-mode power,
but I'm just thinking about the emacs/vi flame wars and people who
might not be able to see past that fact that it's "just an emacs
editing mode" to give org-mode a fair look.  If we want to attract the
emacs fans, I think the screen shot will make it obvious to them.
Anyhow, it's just a thought.  It looks like everything is coming
together good.
Agreed, the colourful one Carsten sent is still my favourite too!  I
understand people might not like the strong colours, but lighter
colours risk being lost on whatever page this shot is included on.
Plus I love the revised unicorn!
I may be biased though as I'm also using the same pmade colour theme.
Thank you all for this discussion and contribution!
I am at a loss which we should choose now.  I have put the pictures
both on
orgmode.org/i.html
lets have a vote, or some more discussion.
I am really nobody to comment in this thread... Just a silent user of this
great package... But I saw the screen-shots and I thought that hey! where's
the powerful, highly customizable agenda?
I think it is one of the greatest aspects of org-mode, and guess that should
be somehow included too...
Just my 2 cents... Chipping in.. :)
Regards,
Saurabh.
I attach todo.org which contains some of the suggested modifications.
"Capture with remember" sounds familiar to Org users, but it may not
ring a bell to other people.
More Carsten's colors with the todo.org file I just sent would be the
These are not Carsten's, but mine (might have to get rid of scroll bar
I do find this latest screen shot too long, with too much text/info on
it.
What the source forge people were asking for was "logo, or, if
you prefer, a screen shot".  This sounds to me that they will
show it in a logo-like way, first a very small version
as a thumbnail, than the full sized version with extra
info, likely including a link to the project homepage.
It is really not that I think I should be deciding this, but
it still seems that a more poster-like shot does fulfil
this function better.  The latest version with improved
fonts (by making them bold, don't know how to antialias)
is
Perhaps just a logo, then.? A single screenshot cannot show
everything, but a web page can.
Here is a suggestion for more logo like version based on the colored
version.
After winning the award, the unicorn should get a laurel wreath or
crown for a while :)
Hi Sebastian,
please make this you second-to-last attempt.
This is great, we should go for it, I like it!
However, the green in DONE is wrong, too bright.
Could you go back to a darker green?  Otherwise
I can my have my friend fix that detail.
For the rest, thanks for helping us out of this stalemate.
Is the picture big enough? 640x480 at least, so say the rules....
Thanks!!!!
- Carsten
Yes, I've changed it, but I can reverse that change again.
It's  510x434 currently. But I've saved it as *.xcf so scaling should be
no problem (as all the texts are still text layers).
Just a minute...
OK. Attached picture is 640x545 and has the darker green buttons again
(funny actually, I did that as one of the last steps, so 3 Ctrl.-z's did
the trick).
How about the *.xcf file? If anyone is interested in that, I could send
it offlist. It's 1 MB - not too big.
Best
Nice work, I like the way this is ending up. One thing, if it's still
negotiable: I find STRT pretty cryptic -- I'd vote for TODO instead.
And... maybe not make it about winning the SourceForge contest?  It sounds a
little too pre-occupied with the contest itself.  My late 2c.
I actually do like the fact that the text is concernted with the
competition, but I agree that the headline "win sourceforge award is
maybe too much.  And, yes, STRT is cryptic, even though I like these
keywords to have the same length.
Here is a proposal for a slightly changed text in the image.
Sebastian, could we try this?
I feel compelled to add my 0.02$ to this discussion.  I wrote the following
down as answers to the two questions posed by the Sourceforge
representative.   I am not a developer, but a semi-knowledgable user.
Org-mode has truly changed the way I do everything.  The following points
represent all of 5 minutes of effort.  There is no way any answer to these
questions can be compressed into 140 words, much less 140 characters.
   1. Our project is:: a multifacted utility outliner/todo and agenda
organizer/notetaking/supermacro publishing system, in a dynamic
collaborative state of development that renders it simple and useful, while
riding at the cutting      edge of technology.
   2. We should win because::
      - attracts many people from various walks of life
      - the development model is responsive to the needs of users at
        all levels
      - OM is immediately intuitively useful, yet has such depth even
        old timers have not mastered many aspects
      - many users are captivated by the utilitarian nature of org-mode
Perhaps all this is far off the mark.
Alan Davis
to disperse because we've been ignorant of their value."
One more:  How about this one:
For question two I currently have:
    We should win because by letting people shape their
    productive selves, org-mode has spawned the best
    community of life hackers in the world.
Just now I thought of
    We should win because Org-mode truely changes the way how it's users
    do everything, and has spawned the best community of life hackers
    in the world.
Grammatical nit picking:
We should win because Org-mode changes the way its users do everything
and has spawned the world's best community of life hackers.
I'd vote against restating the category title ("Most Likely to Change
the Way You Do Everything") in the first half of the sentence. It is
slightly better with Carsten's "truly", but still kind of begs the
question. So I'd say stay with the original version (with a slight
preference for 'evolve' over 'shape'.)
Either
                                    truly changes the way that its users
or
                                    truly changes how its users
We can just say "... truly changes the way its users do everything, ...".
Overall this answer looks very good to me!
May I suggest we lose the word 'truly'? It makes it seem like we're
trying too hard. Org-mode either changes the way we do everything, or it
doesn't.
OK, lets just stick with the old one, using evolve.
